What to wear for your engagement session

Engagement sessions are great fun and oh so relaxed. It is one of my favourite parts of being a wedding photographer, well apart from the wedding, of course!

It is a great time for me to spend time with you and your fiancé to capture some fabulous images of you both. It also helps you get comfortable in front of the camera so you can show off your personalities and relationship.

So, what should you wear to your engagement shoot? Well, the answer is dependent on you and is different for each couple as it relies a lot on your personal style.

However, that’s not to say there aren’t a few things to keep in mind. I’ve put together 5 tips to help you decide what to wear for your engagement session.

1: Be YOU Be yourself. Do not go way out of your comfort zone for your engagement session. The purpose of the shoot is to capture you. You are the subject matter so you should wear something that reflects who you are and what you love.

Do not wear something because you thought it looked cute in someone else’s pictures. Your images will look more natural and you if you both would normally wear the outfits you picked.

2: Do not be afraid of colour If red is your trademark colour, then wear it. Colour always photographs well. However, if your favourite outfit is white, don’t let that stop you. These are not hard and fast rules and at the end of the day, the session is all about you!

Colours do not need to match but they should complement each other. If you are both going to wear green, try wearing different shades.

3: Dress for the same event You and your fiancé should look like you are headed to the same event. In other words, do not wear a cocktail dress while your fiancé wears jeans and a t-shirt.

Outfit changes are always welcome so maybe have one outfit that is pretty casual and fun and another one that’s much more dressy.

4: Comfort is key Think about the time of year and the location of your shoot. If it is freezing outside, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt will not be the best choice!

Make sure your outfit is easy to move around in and fits you well. The more comfortable you are in your outifts, the more relaxed you will be, which will result in you looking your best in the pictures.

5: Get your make up done Your engagement session is a great time to try out your wedding make-up artist. If you can coordinate your trial on the same day as your engagement shoot, great. If not, make sure you wear heavier make up then your everyday look if you’re not going for a natural look on your wedding day.

As well as make up, don’t forget your nails as your engagement ring will be the focus point in a number of your photos!

Pinterest is a great place to look for ideas if you need an inspiration boost, though it doesn’t make the outfits magically appear in your wardrobe! I have a Pinterest board of clothes that have yet to materialise into my life ;o)

I hope you find these tips helpful and if you can think of any more, please leave a comment below and I will update the list.

Your engagement photos are a reflection of you and your partner, and a celebration of your journey together. So relax and enjoy yourself. My job is to capture you in love and completely excited for your big day.
