5 reasons you should book an engagement session
Wedding planning can be time-consuming. From meeting with suppliers, trying on outfits, cake tasting, there are so many items in your wedding to-do list, it’s normal to look for places where you can save time. Some couples think an engagement session isn’t important, and if they aren’t keen on being in front of the camera, the best thing to do is cut out of their planning.
I know I could be biased, but I believe celebrating your engagement with a professional portrait session is worth the investment.
There are many, but I wanted to share just a few reasons an engagement session is a worthwhile experience for any couple.
1. Get to know your photographer
Establishing a relationship with your photographer before your wedding is key to getting the photos you want from your wedding day. Not only will you feel more comfortable with someone you know and have interacted with behind the camera, but your photographer will have a better understanding of your relationship and what makes you both click together. This knowledge is priceless to a photographer and can help them capture details at your wedding that a photographer who doesn’t know you may miss.

2. Learn to be comfortable in front of the camera
Chances are you’re not used to having your photo taken. Who is? Most of us aren’t! Even I, a photographer, is not the most comfortable in front of the camera. And that’s why an engagement session is so important: It gives you a chance to practice being the focus before your wedding, so the feeling won’t be so foreign on your wedding day.
When it comes to romantic poses or even candid shots, think of your engagement session as a test run for you and your partner to get comfortable being photographed. That way, you’ll feel more relaxed and look even more at ease in your wedding photos.

3. Reconnect and remember what brought you here
Your engagement session can be a wonderful opportunity to reflect on your journey as a couple. Consider taking photos at a location that has some significance to the two of you. Maybe the location of your first date or even just somewhere you like to spend time together. The more meaning you add to your engagement session, the more special your photos will feel because they will reflect the love you share. Plus, choosing a location you’re familiar with can help put you more at ease during your session.

4. See yourself in photos before your wedding
Another huge advantage of having engagement photos is the opportunity to see yourself in images before your wedding day. You may learn that there’s a particular angle or shot you don’t like, and you can let your photographer know to avoid those while taking your wedding photos. If you can, do your hair and makeup trial on the same day as your engagement session. That way, you can see not just how your look works, but also how it looks in professional photos. Seeing yourself in gorgeous images will also give you more confidence in being in front of the camera on your wedding day.

5. Receive stunning photos to use
There are tons of ways you can use your engagement images before your wedding. You can create save-the-date cards or incorporate them into your invitations. Engagement photos can also be used to personalise your wedding website or create gifts for family. You can even include your photos at your wedding, whether as décor or as part of the programme. Just be sure to check with your photographer to make sure you can have the printing rights for your photos.
An engagement session may be an additional item in your wedding to-do list, but it’s worth it! Spending time with your photographer can help you feel more ready for your big day, ensuring you get lovely engagement photos and wedding photos that you’ll love!
